Birth Doula

The continuity of care and presence of a Doula during your pregnancy, birth and the first weeks of your newborn’s life can be an incredible source of support and confidence for pregnant/new mothers, couples and families.  I do not replace your partner or your chosen medical care provider and will work alongside your midwife, GP or obstetrician to ensure you feel supported, informed, empowered and consent to the process that ultimately offers the best possible outcome for you and your family.  Why shouldn’t the birth of your baby be your experience to own, treasure and remember?

The word “Doula” is a Greek word that means “woman’s servant”.  Research released by Klaus Kennell (authors of Mothering the Mother: How a Doula Can Help You Have a Shorter Easier and Healthier Birth) shows that having a Doula can offer:

pregnancy, birth doula services sydney, second child, new baby, new family, newborn baby

I’m here for you to ‘hold space’ and provide information on everything pregnancy and birth related – offering this service from a holistic perspective.  At first we meet for an obligation free interview so you can decide if I’m a great fit for you and your partner.

Supporting a birthing doula client through a drug free water birth at Royal North Shore Public Hospital - Sydney Doula Services - Birth your way

During your pregnancy we get together 2-3 times in your home and discuss your birth wishes and preferences, we talk about your fears around birth and can even practise some birthing positions.  I’m on call from weeks 38-42 of your pregnancy (ie 2 weeks before and after your estimated due date) to attend your labour and birth and can incorporate massage, emotional support, motivation and encouragement, suggest alternate positions, tips for breathing and sounding, aromatherapy, homeopathy, capture the experience and special moments with some photos and more…

We see each other again after your baby is born and can discuss the birth in detail (debriefing this very special experience) as well as draw on some of my Postpartum Doula techniques. You will be welcome to contact me anytime by phone, text, facebook messenger and email.

It can be incredibly isolating and lonely as a new mother.  It’s tough managing a new baby, new routines, not enough sleep, too many chores and having to find time to look after yourself and your family.  Firstly, I’ll keep you company and listen – making a lovely hot cup of tea and giving great hugs!  And whether it’s holding your baby while you sleep or shower, folding some laundry, bringing some groceries, cooking a meal, helping with breastfeeding and settling techniques, finding a cleaner or an array of other suggestions, I offer support for you in any way that you need it.  If this is your second or more child, a Postpartum Doula can help supervise your baby so you can spend some quality time with your toddler.

This beautiful form of Hawaiian bodywork is deeply relaxing – physically, emotionally and spiritually.  Long rhythmic flowing strokes are used from head to toe and back again, over and under the body.  It’s a very special and truly unique form of massage – there’s nothing else quite like it out there!  Lomi Lomi Heartworks style, Polynesian floor work (similar to Thai massage) and Pregnancy massage are also on offer and available to you.  With a special apparatus you can comfortably lie face down, and I've treated women as far as 41 weeks pregnant.  Acupressure points can even be used as a form of natural induction (see relaxing into labour massage below).

Both women and men are welcome, and I have been recommended by psychologists to help provide a safe space for their patients to feel and release tension or work through trauma.  100% extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil is used, as are essential oils to add to your experience.  You can come to my room in Bondi Junction, or a mobile service is offered to come to your home.

It’s also the perfect gift for any occasion!  Gift vouchers are available.

Relaxing into labour: induction massage

This is a lovely way to relax and sink into the final weeks, days or hours of your pregnancy.  Focusing on love energy and connection to your body and baby, this massage style integrates Ka Huna principles and flow with pressing induction acupressure points.  Using essential oils known to help induce labour, you will feel luxuriously nurtured and supported, relaxed and energised, ready to birth and meet your baby.

Pilates is a fantastic form of exercise that focuses on the core muscles and pelvic floor.  I will come to your home and observe you performing various regular activities like feeding your baby, unstacking the dishwasher or even putting the pram in your car, and then tailor a specific program just for you with ongoing classes, or simply offer suggestions, tips and tricks on the spot.  Functional exercises are taught that you can apply back into your everyday life to help reduce the risk of injury, increase stability, improve body awareness and posture, strengthen and tone your muscles from top to bottom, and ultimately create lifelong habits through muscle memory.

This personalised mobile Pilates service is an amazing way to focus on you – and it can also be a great gift idea for a new mother.

Pregnancy Pilates classes are available, and group classes are also offered in Bondi Junction.  Gift vouchers are available.

Happy sydney birth doula services clients, mum, dad and baby
By chance, Amanda and I happened to bump into each other and clicked instantly. Having completed the She Births course I was aware of the Doula option and after a coffee with Amanda we chose to have her on our journey. We discussed our birthing choices in detail and learnt to have an open mind. Amanda provided information on all aspects of delivery including pain relief options, what to bring to the delivery, breathing and massage techniques to name a few. Our baby girl was posterior and after 11 hours of active labour, I was fatiguing and really wanted to have a vaginal delivery. Amanda used acupressure points and homeopathy to help turn the baby into the correct position, and to our relief I felt her turn and she came out face down! My husband also found Amanda to be a great support during the labour. We love the videos and photographs she took of our birth. If you’re considering a Doula, I would highly recommend speaking to Amanda.
